$350 vs. $650. Both include companion certificates, MQD headstart, and $440–$560 in credits. But only one has Sky Club + Centurion Lounge access and a First Class companion certificate. Here's how to decide.
The Delta SkyMiles Platinum and Delta SkyMiles Reserve are the two premium personal Delta cards from American Express. Both target frequent Delta flyers — but $300 separates their annual fees, and the differences in what you get for that $300 are significant and specific. The right choice depends almost entirely on two questions: do you want lounge access, and do you fly First Class?

Conservative annual value estimate
Using companion cert + lounge access
Main Cabin only — valid for domestic round-trips, Caribbean, and Central America. A $300 Main Cabin ticket yields ~$278 in companion savings (taxes only). For Main Cabin travelers, this frequently covers or exceeds the $350 annual fee. Simple and valuable if you fly economy with a travel partner regularly.
First Class, Delta Comfort+, or Main Cabin. The flexibility to use First Class transforms the math: a $1,200 First Class ticket yields ~$1,178 in companion savings — nearly twice the entire annual fee in a single certificate use. For Main Cabin flyers, the Reserve's certificate offers no additional value over the Platinum's.
Zero lounge access. No Sky Club, no Centurion Lounge, no Priority Pass. The Platinum card provides no airport lounge benefit whatsoever. For frequent flyers who value pre-flight relaxation, this is the card's most significant limitation.
15 Sky Club visits per year (plus 4 guest passes), plus Centurion Lounge and Escape Lounge access when flying Delta on a ticket purchased with the Reserve card. Sky Club day passes cost $50 — 15 visits are worth $750 in avoided fees. Centurion Lounges are widely considered the best credit card lounges available, with full bars, hot food, and spa services.
3x Delta + hotels, 2x dining worldwide and U.S. supermarkets, 1x everything else. The 2x on dining and groceries gives the Platinum meaningfully better everyday earn rates than the Reserve. For a household spending $800/month on food and restaurants, Platinum earns $22.80/month at 1.2¢/mile vs. Reserve's $11.52/month.
3x Delta, 1x everything else — including dining, hotels, and groceries. The Reserve's weak non-Delta earning means you're leaving money on the table on all non-flight spending. Unless you're pairing it with an Amex Gold (4x dining) or other high-earning card, the Reserve's earning rates are a notable weakness.
$120 rideshare + $120 Resy ($10/month) + $200 Delta Stays = $440/year. All three credits are genuinely usable for most cardholders who travel by rideshare, dine at Resy restaurants, and book hotels. Captures $440 on a $350 fee — net positive before earning a mile.
$120 rideshare + $240 Resy ($20/month, doubled from Platinum) + $200 Delta Stays = $560/year. The Reserve's Resy credit is $120 more per year, reflecting the card's higher tier. Same usability, just more monthly value for frequent restaurant goers in Resy markets.
Neither the Platinum nor Reserve companion certificate or lounge benefits apply to Basic Economy tickets. You must purchase at least Main Cabin to use your lounge benefits and companion certificate. Always check your fare class before expecting these benefits at the airport.
Is the Reserve worth $300 more per year than the Platinum? The math depends on three factors:
Up to 90K miles · Main Cabin cert · $440+ credits · $350/yr
Read Full Review →Up to 100K miles · First Class cert · Lounges · $650/yr
Read Full Review →Technically yes, but Amex's "once per lifetime" welcome bonus rule and its family language policies make this complicated. If you've held one Delta card and received its welcome bonus, applying for the other may affect your bonus eligibility. Check your eligibility at americanexpress.com before applying for both.
No. If you product-change your Platinum to a Reserve, you do not receive a new welcome bonus. To earn the Reserve's welcome bonus, you must apply as a new cardholder — subject to Amex's once-per-lifetime policy.
If you never use the companion certificate, the value equation changes dramatically. The Platinum's net value drops to $440 in credits minus $350 fee = +$90/year. The Reserve's net value drops to $560 credits minus $650 fee = -$90/year (before lounge value). Without the companion certificate, the Platinum is the clear winner. With the Reserve, you'd need to use the Sky Club regularly to justify it.
